Comedy of Dante Alighieri
 
 
The Comedy was written in the early 1300’s.
Dante was a citizen of Florence but exiled because of political intrigue.
The Comedy is divided into three parts (Canzoni) – Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
It is written in the Florentine dialect – Italian.
It is a long poem written in terza rima. (aba bcb cdc etc.)
Highly structured. Each Canzone is divided into several canti. Total of 100.
Many references to the current day political upheavals in medieval Italy.
Follows the style of the Latin epic poem the Aeneid by Virgil.
The Inferno has 34 canti.
Paradiso and Purgatorio have 33 canti each.
The chronology of The Inferno: begins Thursday, April 7, 1300 evening, day before Good Friday; ends Saturday April 9. Just before Easter.
It’s a description of Dante’s passage through Hell.
