  Canto IV   1st Circle: Limbo
       
  Ruppemi l'alto sonno ne la testa Wrenching me from a deep sleep within  
  un greve truono, si' ch'io mi riscossi   my head sounded a thunder-clap, so that  
  come persona ch'e' per forza desta;  I started as a person awakened by force;  
       
  e l'occhio riposato intorno mossi, and my rested eyes moved around,  
  dritto levato, e fiso riguardai I stood up, and with fixed vision  
  per conoscer lo loco dov'io fossi.  recognized the place where I was.  
       
  Vero e' che `n su la proda mi trovai The truth is that I found myself on  
  de la valle d'abisso dolorosa  the brink of the valley of the dolorous abyss

  Lo buon maestro comincio' a dire: The good master began to speak:  
  "Mira colui con quella spada in mano, "Look at him  with a sword in hand,  
  che vien dinanzi ai tre si' come sire: who comes before the other three as a lord:  
       
  quelli e' Omero poeta sovrano; he's Homer, the sovereign poet;  
  l'altro  Orazio satiro che vene; the other is Horace the satirist;  
  Ovidio e' `l terzo, e l'ultimo Lucano. Ovid is the third, and the last is Lucan.  
       
  Pero' che ciascun meco si convene Because each one of them has here convened  
  nel nome che sono' la voce sola,  in my name only,  
  fannomi onore, e di cio' fanno bene."  they do me great honor."  
       
  Cosi' vid'i' adunar la bella scola So I saw each one of the beautiful school  
  di quel segnor de l'altissimo canto  of that lord of the highest song  
  che sovra li altri com'aquila vola.  that above the others soared like an eagle.

  Venimmo al pie' d'un nobile castello, We came to the foot of a noble castle,  
  sette volte cerchiato d'alte mura,  seven time encircled by high walls,

  Questo passammo come terra dura; This we crossed as if solid land;  
  per sette porte intrai con questi savi:  through seven gates I entered with these sages:  
  giugnemmo in prato di fresca verdura.  arriving at a fresh verdant meadow.  
       
  Genti v'eran con occhi tardi e gravi, The people there had downcast eyes,  
  di grande autorita’ ne' lor sembianti:  great authority in their appearances:  
  parlavan rado, con voci soavi.  they spoke rarely, with soft voices.  
       
  Traemmoci cosi' da l'un de' canti, They led us from one end to the other,  
  in loco aperto, luminoso e alto, Under the open air, luminous and high,  
  si' che veder si potien tutti quanti. One could see in every direction.  
       
  Cola' diritto, sovra `l verde smalto, There directly, upon the emerald green,  
  mi fuor mostrati li spiriti magni,  were shown to me the great spirits,  
  che del vedere in me stesso m'essalto.  so that seeing them exalted me.  
       
  I' vidi Eletra con molti compagni, I saw Electra with many companions:  
  tra ` quai conobbi Etto'r ed Enea, Among which I recognized Hector and Aeneas,  
  Cesare armato con li occhi grifagni. Caesar armed with hawk eyes.  
       
  Vidi Cammilla e la Pantasilea; I saw Camilla and Penthesilea  
  da l'altra parte, vidi `l re Latino  from the other side, I saw the king of Latium  
  che con Lavina sua figlia sedea.  sitting with his daughter Lavinia.  
       
  Vidi quel Bruto che caccio' Tarquino, I saw the Brutus who expelled the Tarquin,  
  Lucrezia, Iulia, Marzia e Corniglia; Lucretia, Julia, Martia and Cornelia;  
  e solo, in parte, vidi `l Saladino. and alone by himself, I saw the Saladin.  
       
  Poi ch'innalzai un poco piu' le ciglia, Then as I began to lift up my eyes a little,  
  vidi `l maestro di color che sanno I saw the master of those who know  
  seder tra filosofica famiglia.  sitting among a philosophic family.  
       
  Tutti lo miran, tutti onor li fanno: All admired him, everyone honored him:  
  quivi vid'io Socrate e Platone,  it was here that I saw Socrates and Plato,  
  che `nnanzi a li altri piu' presso li stanno;  who before all the others stand nearest.  
       
  Democrito, che `l mondo a caso pone, Democritus, who ascribes the world to chance,  
  Diogens, Anassagora e Tale, Diogenes, Anaxagoras, and Thales,  
  Empedocle's, Eraclito e Zenone; Empedocles, Heraclitus, and Zeno;  
       
  e vidi il buono accoglitor del quale, and I saw the grand collector of qualities,  
  Diascoride dico; e vidi Orfeo, Diascorides I mean; and I saw Orpheus,  
  Tulio e Lino e Seneca morale; Tully and Linus and Seneca the moralist;  
       
  Euclide geome'tra e Tolomeo, Euclid the geometer and Ptolemy,  
  Ipocra'te, Avicenna e Galieno, Hippocrates, Avicenna and Galen,  
  Averoi's, che `l gran comento feo. Averroes, that grand commentator.  
       
  Io non posso ritrar di tutti a pieno, I can't paint a full picture,  
  pero' che si' mi caccia il lungo tema,  because the long theme escapes me,  
  che molte volte al fatto il dir vien meno.  many times the facts speak louder than words.  
       
  La sesta compagnia in due si scema: The company of six now diminished to two:  
  per altra via mi mena il savio duca,  into another journey the sage leads me;  
  fuor de la queta, ne l'aura che trema.  out of the quiet, into the trembling aura.  
       
  E vegno in parte ove non e' che luca. and I come to the place where there is no light.
